Best House Tracks: Sorting downloads folder

Hi and welcome to our Dj Case “House Music Download FAQ” series.

In this part we gonna tell you a little bit more about the first way to find the best tracks, which is called - Download Everything You See. We won’t go through the downloading methods now, as far as this will be covered in future FAQ updates.

Ok. After learning how to download music from blogs & forums you have a pile of music on your HDD, like 10 gigabytes of tracks or more. Here are our recommendations on how to sort them:

The very first one is to listen to your newly downloaded house tracks in the morning, when your ears are fresh and you are not feeling tired. For in most cases, when you try to sort some music at the end of the day, everything seems too heavy and too loud. You should also be in a good mood, this will help you not to miss great tracks. Morning is not obligatory, but most of the people feel better after a night of delicious sleep :)

We do not recommend to use headphones while going through your downloaded tracks. It’s a kinda monotonous process and this can result in a headache real soon. So use your speakers, and don’t turn them on too loud, just find the most comfortable volume. However some tracks need to be played high volume, so you will need to turn your volume up from time to time. But always remember to return it back down! For those who don’t care about their ears – watch “Its All Gone, Pete Tong” movie. Maybe you’ll be more careful with volume of your speakers.

To sort my downloaded tracks quick I prefer opening them one by one in Winamp, which is being set to “Always on top“. I open a folder with tracks, switch to the list view, have my Winamp placed right next to the list and start doubleclicking each track one by one. This placement allows me to move quick between the list of tracks and the scroll bar of Winamp. You can use some other music player, we’ll have a list of them posted soon.

So what I usually do is “doubleclick a track to open in Winamp > right away click about 45 seconds far to check the beats > click in the middle to check the overall build-up > and optionally checkout some break-down“. If the track does not attract attention I move to the next one. If it seems nice I have it copied to a separate empty folder which I have created especially to put sorted tracks in. The process of going through the tracks should be very fast. If you can’t value the track in 2-5 seconds you will never be able to dig the enormous amount of music in a short period of time.

If you have a really big amount of downloaded house music (which usually happens), I suggest to split the process in two or three days. Don’t try to spend 5 hours to sort everything at once. You should stop and have at least some rest in silence after about 2 hours. This will give a timeout to your ears and brains before the next music portion.

After you have sorted the best tracks from the pile you should end up with a nice folder which usually has about 5% of originally downloaded house music. This folder contains house tracks which need further attention. You should go through them more carefully. I usually move them to my iPod to listen to when I go somewhere, or I just turn them on whenever I have some free time.

After I have chosen the tracks I like best I can go and by them at some online store or either keep the pirate mp3 copies at my own risk. The rest of the tracks is always being deleted without any mercy. I don’t see a reason to store each week about 10 GB of tracks which I don’t like.

Thus after the process my download folder is empty again and ready for the next cycle of downloading house music and sorting it.

Hope you’ve found this tut useful and will follow at least some of my recommendations. See ya!

So is it true that they search hard drives of DJs here in Europe…? I was just curious, it’s strange the different kinds of “freedom” on the two sides of the pond (including Latin America, too, where I now live).

  4. Tim Soulo says:

nio, I have never heard a european story like that, maybe it does happen, but not too often.
There’s no actually way to stop pirate mp3’s. There should be another way to make money with your music. I think I have to make a post about it, cause I have some thoughts.
