Download Music: SoulSeek Basics
Bonjour my fellow house lovers. Today’s article is dedicated to one of my favourite pieces of software that is called SoulSeek, or either they call it slsk.
This guy is a very popular p2p connector, which is dedicated purely to music. The principe is simple – you share some music on your PC, and it is being added to search index together with tons of music from people all over the world. And if you do a search for some track and you find it – you are going to download it directly from the owners PC. So don’t start bitching when your source turns off his PC and goes to bed :)
Ok. So how to tame a brute, called SoulSeek? Nice way to start is to download and install it on your PC. Here’s where this beast lives – http://slsknet.org/download.html I hope all of you are familiar with the process and there’s no need to cover it in detail.
Launch it! And immediately it will ask you to introduce yourself. Be polite and try to use some unique nickname.

Next thing that an honest soulseek breeder should do is to feed him with some kewl music. So hit the File Sharing button.

You’ll see some options to share your files and specify the path to store downloaded files to.

Lets cover them real quick:
Select save folder: basically advice to slsk where to store the newly downloaded music
Add shared folder: here is where you share your music with the rest of the world, don’t be greedy and share the best with the rest. God is watching you, my dear :) You will also be prompted for some privacy optios, I prefer sharing my stuff with all the people, hope you too!
Accept uploads from: you should definitely permit that ONLY to your userlist, or uploads permitted list. Cause there still some bad people around, who can send some scum.
Upload return policy: a thing that I don’t really use as far as I don’t really understand it… who cares?
If you have changed your mind and need to unshare some folder – use the right click on it. You can also change folder access.

I know you’re already impatient about downloading some music. Firstly you should check the status of SoulSeek. If it’s awake or not. If its not, just click on the connection status button.

Now do the search, yeah, press that Search Files button. Say you were searching in blogs & forums for the number 1 beatport tech house track, which is Saeed Younan – Yeah Ha (Original Mix) and it’s not there yet. Time to try SoulSeek!

Let’s look at the results. Btw I like to sort them by filesize, to see only high quality tracks. Press on Size column to do that. Grey tracks can’t be doanloaded instantly, as there is some queue to download from this user. You check In Queue row to find out how much tracks are to be downoaded from this user before you can download this one. Tracks in black are downloaded right away. So doubleclick the black track and it will appear in your Transfers section.

There you can rightclick the track to see some options:
Get place in line – will show the queue;
Browse User’s files – will show you what else this guy has shared.
You are free to go through the files and download what you like. But don’t you download lots of files at a time from one user, this creates an enormous queue! Mostly you are allowed to download 10-20 tracks at a time, depending on the popularity of the files that this user offers. Some users evel leave warning like that lol

Basically this is about all. Yes, SlSk is simple and powerfull. And yeah, there are chat rooms too. Since you are here I suppose you are interested in house music room. Rooms section is to the right so go and doublecklick on the house one.

You are free to browse the files of group participants and sometimes you can even talk to them! SoulSeekerz are very polite and peaceful people!

I think I’ve covered all the necessary basics that one should know when he launches SLSK for the first time. It sure has some more tricks, which I didn’t tell you about, to keep you a little curious about this great piece of software. One of the benefits of SoulSeek is that people often share tracks that were downloaded in online stores, and those are often 320 kbps!
Hope you all enjoyed this little TUT and see ya in the next one!
Ok , so when I’ll start to download music from slsk network I become famous DJ ?
thanks! cool article!
soulseek is very for me.
